On February 28, 2024, the CDC recommended that people ages 65+ receive another dose of the COVID vaccine if they received their last COVID vaccine at least four months prior. This recommendation was made because the immunity provided by the vaccine wears off faster in older adults who are more likely to be sick or die from COVID.

The most recent Moderna and Pfizer COVID vaccines received FDA approval on September 11, 2023.  While the vaccine was recommended and available, only 13% of children, 22% of adults, and 42% of those age 65+ have gotten the most recent COVID vaccine. As a result of low vaccination rates and an increase in gatherings, the virus began to spread again during November and December of 2023 resulting in more hospitalizations and deaths.

On February 28, 2024 the CDC recommended that those age 65+ receive another dose of the COVID vaccine if it has been at least four months since they received a COVID vaccine.

The purpose of the CDC’s recommendation is to help reduce COVID-related hospitalizations and deaths among the elderly. The vaccine’s defenses, while effective in reducing COVID hospitalizations and deaths, tends to wear off faster for older individuals.

CDC has not announced any updated recommendations for those who are younger than 65 years old.
