H5N1 avian influenza (bird flu) was confirmed in several dead geese at Heartland of America Park in Omaha, NE on March 18, 2025, following reports of dead birds in the area. While the risk to humans is still low, human infections can be prevented by avoiding direct contact with infected birds, washing hands, and changing shoes after exposure. If you see dead or sick birds, keep pets away and contact the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.

The risk to the public is minimal but possible, and people visiting the park should be especially careful not to touch any dead birds and keep dogs on a leash to prevent them from coming into contact with dead wild birds.

People should also refrain from feeding waterfowl (or any animal) in the park. Feeding ducks and geese is harmful because it can alter migration times, increase pollution in the water, and make it easier for disease to spread between birds due to them gathering closely in one area.

If park visitors see a dead or sick wild bird, do not attempt to remove or catch it. Instead, contact local officials. Suspected avian influenza or sick / dead bird sightings can be reported on the Nebraska Game and Parks website.

The Douglas County Health Department is coordinating their response with health organizations and wildlife agencies.
